Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds (900g) potatoes, peeled and chunked
  • 4 tablespoons (56g) butter
  • 1/3 cup (80ml) milk
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 1/2 pounds (680g) ground lamb or beef
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 cup (240ml) beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. Boil potatoes until tender. Mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper.
  2. Cook onion and carrot in oil 5 minutes. Add garlic and ground meat and brown it.
  3. Stir in tomato paste and flour. Add broth and Worcestershire. Simmer until thick. Fold in peas.
  4. Spread the meat in a 9×13 dish. Cover with potatoes. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 25 minutes until the peaks brown.

Notes

Lamb is the older shepherd’s pie. Beef is the cottage-pie cousin and is listed here because US searches use both names for this bake.
