Description
Old fashioned with bourbon and bitters. From Your Daily Hit.
Ingredients
- 1 sugar cube or 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 to 3 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 teaspoon water
- 2 ounces (60ml) bourbon
- Large clear ice cube
- Orange peel
Instructions
- Put sugar, bitters, and water in a rocks glass. Muddle until the sugar dissolves.
- Add bourbon and stir with one large cube until the glass is cold, about 15 seconds.
- Express an orange peel over the drink, rub it on the rim, and drop it in.
- Serve without a straw so the dilution stays slow.
Notes
A muddled fruit salad is a different, sweeter bar style. This page is the spirit-forward stir. Rye can replace bourbon.

Stirred whiskey, not a mule
The Moscow mule is ginger beer and lime. This drink has no soda.
Substitutions
Demerara syrup, 1/4 ounce, can replace the sugar cube. Rye is the drier choice.
Mistakes to avoid
Shaking clouds the drink and over-dilutes it. Stir.
Storage
Build each drink to order. Bitters keep on the shelf.

FAQ
Bourbon or rye?
Bourbon is sweeter. Rye is spicier. Both are an old fashioned.
Do I muddle an orange slice?
Not on this page. A peel oils the surface. Fruit chunks are a different build.
Which bitters?
Angostura is the default. Orange bitters are a second dash, not a replacement.
Big ice or small?
One large cube melts slower and keeps the drink from going watery.
